Last week was Fire Safety Week. This is an annual event dedicated to raising awareness about fire prevention and safety measures. This week served as an important reminder for our learners and community to prioritize fire safety at school and in their homes. By promoting education and preparedness, we hope to reduce the risk of fire-related incidents by ensuring everyone knows how to respond in emergencies. Thank you to our local Shapleigh Fire Department for coming and educating our learners this past week!

Staff Spotlight: My name is Liza Walters and I’m thrilled to be at Shapleigh this year as the 4/5 reading teacher! I grew up in MA and NJ and moved to Maine a little over a year ago to begin a teaching job in Portland. I have an BA from Brown University in Psychology and a Joint MA degree in Elementary Education and Moderate Disabilities from Lesley University, and am certified to teach Elementary Education, Special Education, and ELA grades 5-8. I absolutely love working with children and hope to foster a passion for reading in my students. I enjoy spending my free time adventuring and my pup in the woods or by the water, attending sporting events and concerts with friends, designing and making jewelry, and sitting in my arm chair with a good book. I grew up playing three team sports, and now in my old (!) age, I enjoy playing pickleball and tennis. In my down time you can find me visiting family and friends in Boston and on the beaches of Cape Cod, where I was lucky enough to spend summers as a child with my family.

Staff Spotlight: My name is Darla McCann. I joined the Shapleigh family last fall as the Literacy and Math Specialist. I graduated from the University of Maine in Orono and have worked within the district for ten years. Most recently, I served as a classroom teacher at Waterboro Elementary where I looped with grades 4 and 5. Growing up in Lamoine, Maine, I attended a small school very similar to Shapleigh. After moving to Massachusetts and Florida, I followed my heart back to Maine to raise my family. I am delighted to live within the RSU 57 district with my husband and two teenage children. In my free time, I enjoy cooking savory concoctions, getting lost in a great book, hiking the beautiful Maine landscape, and spending time "Downeast" at my family camp. I hope you'll pop over and introduce yourself if you see me around the school!

Welcome Back
Dear RSU 57 Community, Today marks an exciting milestone as all 2,910 students across RSU 57 returned to school. Our Pre-K and Kindergarten students, along with those in grades 10-12, began their first day of the 2024-2025 school year today. Our dedicated staff are thrilled to welcome both new and returning learners into our schools and classrooms. As we ease into the new school year, we ask for your patience with our transportation department. Our youngest learners, particularly our 4 and 5-year-old students, are still getting accustomed to boarding and exiting school buses and vehicles safely. We anticipate that elementary bus runs may be slightly delayed over the next three days as we assist these students during this transition. Your cooperation and understanding are essential to ensuring a smooth and safe experience for everyone. Finally, I want to extend my deepest gratitude to all the students, families, and caregivers who attended our annual school open houses last week. Your involvement is invaluable as we work together to prepare our students for success in an ever-changing world. Thank you for your continued support and partnership as we embark on another year of learning and growth. Sincerely, Stephen D. Marquis, PhD. Superintendent of Schools
