It is with great excitement and pride that we announce the recipients of the Model Mustang Staff Award for the month of October! This award is a tribute to those outstanding individuals who embody the qualities of a true “Model Mustang”; they inspire, lead, foster positivity, persevere, and excel in all that they do. Each Model Mustang was nominated by colleagues who took the time to acknowledge and celebrate their coworkers’ exceptional contributions to our district. Their hard work and commitment have not gone unnoticed, and we are grateful for the positive impact they have within RSU 57! This month's raffle winner is Phil Gibson from our RSU 57 Operations department! "Phil has jumped into his new role as the Building Maintenance Coordinator with a high level of customer service, eagerness to learn and a level of care that is second to none. We are incredibly lucky to have him here!" Click the link below to view the full list of Model Mustang recipients. This month for our Harvest of the Month, we did a "DISTRICT WIDE " presentation! Instead of being in one school with our HotM recipe demo, we sent it out district wide and ALL 7 SCHOOLS got to try our Garlic Parmesan Maine Broccoli recipe at some point this month during their lunch time (*check school lunch menus to see when it was served)! Staff Spotlight: Deb Waterhouse - Math and Literacy Ed Tech III. My name is Deb Waterhouse. I am a literacy/math ed tech here at Shapleigh. I have been in the district for over 24 years. I started as the librarian and transitioned to Title I in 2009. I love my job and love working with the students and watching them grow. I am a mom of two boys, Brad and Tim; a grandmother to one grandson, Lucas; and a doggy mom to my dog Kaydee. When I’m not at work I love spending time with family and friends, walking my dog, swimming, playing pickleball (not very well!), reading, and spending time at our camp, boating and fishing. Sadly, this will be my last year at Shapleigh. I will be retiring December 31. I do plan on coming back in the Spring to substitute teach. I’m sure I’ll be missing the kiddos by then!

Our school recently participated in a mock voting activity, organized by our fourth and fifth graders as part of their social studies unit. As part of the project, all students and staff had the opportunity to cast their votes for their favorite design for the State of Maine flag. It was a fantastic hands-on experience, and the results were impressive! Our students predicted the state results with remarkable accuracy, with their vote percentages closely matching those of the actual voting outcome. This activity provided a great opportunity for students to engage with the democratic process, learn about civic participation, and make connections to real-world events. Thank you to our fourth and fifth graders for organizing such a meaningful and fun learning experience!

Staff Spotlight: Dani Guerin - Lead Custodian. I’ve been here for two years, and I absolutely LOVE my job! In addition to this role, I run my own cleaning business, and before that, I worked as a Certified Correctional Officer in a New Hampshire county jail for four years. I’m a proud dog mom to two: Levi, an American Pit Bull Terrier mix rescued from Georgia, and Bailey, a purebred German Shepherd from Newfield, who has a little wild coyote mixed in! I’m completely obsessed with both of them. My partner, who is also my high school sweetheart and the Maintenance Coordinator for the Mustang District, and I love spending time together. We enjoy camping, 4-wheeling, and staying busy improving our home and land in Shapleigh! I share a strong bond with the women in my family, especially my mom and my nana. I love to cook, but I really LOVE to eat! I put hot sauce on everything, and my favorite foods are pizza and French fries. The students and staff at Shapleigh Memorial School make it a place I genuinely enjoy coming to five days a week. Each morning, I look forward to starting my workday. Thanks for reading!!

Staff Spotlight: Janice Powers - Resource Room Teacher. The 2024 - 2025 school year begins my ninth year as a Special Educator and my eighteenth year in education. Prior to joining the team at Shapleigh Memorial School, I worked in Arlington, Massachusetts as a Learning Specialist. I have a BA in Biology and a Masters in Special Education, Mild to Moderate Disabilities. I recently received a Certificate of Advanced Study (CAS) in Language and Literacy from MGH-IHP and became a licensed Reading Specialist. I have a strong passion for multi-sensory, structured literacy and math instruction and believe that all children can become proficient readers and mathematicians. I am a certified Wilson Dyslexia Practitioner and an Orton Gillingham Associate. Additionally, I've been trained in LETRS, RAVE-O, Framing Your Thoughts, and Just Words, and have taken numerous classes on multi-sensory math instruction and intervention. My husband and I have had a home in Biddeford for many years and decided this year would be the one that we move to Maine on a permanent basis. We enjoy gardening, reading, exercising, and cooking. This is my second year growing dahlias, and I am obsessed! Our eldest son Jack and his wife Sarah are expecting their first child in December. He's in the military and they live in Norfolk, Virginia. Our middle child, Ellie, works as an Ultrasound Technician in the Boston area, and our youngest, Stephen, is living in NYC, working in media and advertising. Our favorite child, Finley, is a 12 year old Golden Retriever. Life's been good.

Staff Spotlight: Hello! My name is Julia Carbone and I am the voice you hear when you call Shapleigh Memorial School, during announcements, and when it is time for dismissal! I live in the district with my husband Scott, who is a P.E. teacher at MMS, and our two daughters. Siena is a freshman at MHS and Myah Cate is in 7th grade at MMS. When I'm not at work you can usually find me mid-field, half-court, or at the track and field watching my girls play soccer, basketball and throw all the things at track meets. We love RSU57 athletics! I also love to be outside doing projects at home, gardening and hanging with our Golden Mountain Dog "Barkley". This is my 5th year as the administrative assistant here at Shapleigh Memorial School. I have had a few different fun jobs in my life but this has been my MOST favorite! I love the staff and students here and how each day is different!

Staff Spotlight: Hello, my name is Heather Tederous and I am the 2/3 reading teacher at our school! This is my 17th year teaching. I taught in Florida for two years, in Bonny Eagle for six years, at St.Thomas in Sanford for six years and this is my third year here! I stayed home for 4 years with my girls when they were just little! Teaching was a lifelong dream for me. From the young age of 6, I “played” teacher in my basement with my siblings. I would ask my teachers to bring home extra copies of worksheets, scholastic news and even book club order forms to give to my “pretend” students. I had a real teacher desk, chalk board and even individual student desks. My dream became a reality when I graduated from the University of Maine in 2004. I live in Sanford with my husband, John and my two daughters, Ella and Mia. Ella is a freshman this year and Mia is in seventh grade. These girls keep us busy! Ella plays field hockey and basketball and Mia has a horse named Jazz who she rides and competes with. We love to travel as a family and go camping in the summer. We enjoy spending the summers at home swimming in our pool. I love getting my classroom ready with a new “theme” each year for my incoming class. I love to teach children to read and see the lightbulb go on!! I look forward to getting my students in the fall and watching them grow all year long!

Staff Spotlight: Hello, my name is Rob Burdsall and I teach math to the 4th and 5th graders. I have been a Maine resident for the past 8 years. I am originally from Connecticut and currently live in Biddeford with my wife and 2 year old daughter. I spend all my extra time with them! We can regularly be found attending concerts and exploring different local establishments in Maine. We also enjoy spending time at the beach or hiking different trails. My wife Meredith is originally from New Jersey and works for the State Department processing Visas. My daughter Arwen is a very active learner already and loves Disney movies. Arwen is lucky to have both sides of her grandparents living locally so we spend many weekends with extended family and friends! Last but not least, my wife and I have 2 cats, Gordon and Frank. I loved my first year at Shapleigh and look forward to continuing working with your children this year. I am enjoying getting to know all of our 4th and 5th graders this year as their math teacher!

Staff Spotlight: Hi! My name is Lindsey Gould, and I work at Shapleigh Memorial as an Ed-tech in our Special Education department. I work 1-on-1 with students and push in for academic support within the classroom. I’m currently working on my undergraduate program for a degree in Linguistics with a Spanish focus, and aspire to work with students in ESOL (students learning English as a second language) in the near future! I have lived in Maine my whole life, and currently reside in Shapleigh with my partner of five years. I have a huge passion for music and have been playing bass guitar since I was twelve years old. I love spending my free time with my family & friends; and I enjoy my summers on the boat at my family’s lakehouse on Square Pond. I joined Shapleigh midway through the year last year, and have loved getting to know everyone! I look forward to what this year will bring! :)
