For the past 5 years learners at Shapleigh Memorial School have participated in the Summer Read to Ride Challenge through the Maine Department of Education. To support continued growth in reading, the program asks learners to read for at least 500 minutes over the summer time and submit the passport in the fall to the school. Once all passports are submitted, we choose one school level child, by raffle, to send into the state level. This is our first year with a winner from Shapleigh Memorial School. Congratulations to Gabby Goodwin in Mrs. Marshall's kindergarten class. She was presented with a special award and gift certificate to purchase a new bike! Congratulations Gabby and we can't wait to see your new bicycle!
We kicked off our Kindness Month celebration this past week with some wonderful presentations from Kids Free to Grow and the Cromwell Center to support our theme of Kindness Can Change the World! A special thank you in advance to our 5th grade kindness committee members for all their work with our celebration this month.
After the introductory Technology in a Bag lesson, Ms. Hamlin's 4th grade class at Shapleigh Memorial School completed the Engineering is Elementary (EiE) program, Leif Catches the Wind. This unit incorporates a mechanical engineering story that ties in renewable energy and is set in Denmark. Students used the engineering design process to design sails to test on a track in front of a fan. They were able to investigate what properties would catch the most wind and make the sail travel. Next, they used that information to design blades for a windmill. The goal was to get a windmill to spin and lift weight. Students worked in teams to develop and improve windmill blades. Nice work, Engineers!
Miss Chu's 3rd grade class at Shapleigh Memorial participated in a STEM challenge right before Holiday Break. Students were challenged to build a tree that could stand by itself using only straws, pipe cleaners, beads, and dot stickers. Way to go, Mustangs!
